Listed building on the Korenmarkt
WISHES OF THE CLIENT
The space is located in Ghent’s old post office. It is a listed building so nothing may be changed or mounted to the interior. We want to open a branch at this eye-catching location.
The designated zone has two cast iron pillars right in the middle of the floor and a listed dividing wall, 50% of which must be visible. There are hardly any closed walls which is a real drawback for a Skins location because it means there is not enough shelving space.
Time to draw up a list. Towers will be built around the pillars, which are self-supporting, and this will create additional floor space. Glass display cabinets will be placed in front of the dividing walls.
The top floor screed will continue through into the public spaces so that the shop becomes part of the entrance hall.
SECOND LEASE OF LIFE
The former general post office is one of the most prominent buildings on the Korenmarkt – the heart of the city. It had been empty for years until a group of Dutch retailers decided to jointly occupy it. The top floors will be given a new lease of life as a boutique hotel.
